History is made in MC Babe Ruth

With two Babe Ruth teams still playing, here is some more trivia from the tournament trail.

The 13-year-old state title won by Mifflin County brings the league’s total to 25. Second is Drexel Hill with 15.5 and third is Phoenixville with 13. Next in line are West End, Williamsport, Broomall-Newtown and Levittown with 12. Drexel Hill’s half came in 1976 when it played in the 13-year-old tournament in Milroy and due to weather, the championship with Pennsbury was never played.

The win for Mifflin County in McAlisterville was the league’s 14th state title on the road, which is a new state record. Drexel Hill had the old mark with 13.5. Mifflin County has won 11 state titles at home (nine in Milroy and two in Belleville).

Mifflin County becomes the first league to win a state title in seven-consecutive decades. Mifflin County won its first state title in 1960. It added one in the 1970s; 4 in the 1980s; 3 in the 1990s; 10 in the 2000s; 5 in the 2010s; and one in the 2020s. Drexel Hill is second, winning in five consecutive decades, 1970s-2010s.

The two teams Mifflin County will be sending to the Mid-Atlantic Regionals will mark the 28th and 29th times that has happened. Mifflin County went as state champions 25 times. In 1976, Mifflin County went as the third place team at the 13-year-old level; Mifflin County hosted the regionals in 2004 (15-year-olds). In 2009, the Mifflin County 13-year-olds went as a third-place team and now this year the 15-year-olds are going as the state runner-up. West End of Williamsport is second with 20 appearances in the Mid-Atlantic tournament.

When the Mifflin County 15-year-olds take the field in Scranton on Thursday it will mark the 72nd different tournament site Mifflin County has played at.

Mifflin County 15-year-old manager Bill Corbin has now appeared in 12 state final fours. His teams have finished second seven times and first five times. He is tied with the late Fred Zook, who coached five third place finishes, three state runner-ups and four state champions.

Corbin has now been in 14 Pennsylvania state finals, 12 as a manager and two as a coach. Second is Fred Zook with 10 (manager seven times and three times as a coach).

This will not mark the first time Mifflin County has sent multiple teams to the Mid-Atlantics. Other years included, 1987, 2003 (3 teams), 2004, 2007 and 2009.

Belltown has taken the lead for winning pitchers (six) in state championship games with Logan Ruth being the winner in the 13-year-old battle with West End. Other Belltown pitchers who have been the winning hurlers have been: Doug Erb, 13-year-olds (1983); Chris Freed 14-15 year-olds (1987); Ryan Frankhouser 15-year-olds (1999); Cody Heane 15-year-olds (2008) and Camden Shawver 15-year-olds (2017). McVeytown is second with five pitchers.

Mifflin County has been in the last four 15-year-old state finals, but hasn’t scored a run in the last two, losing 6-0 in 2019 to Tri-Township and 5-0 to Centre County in 2021. The last player to score a run for Mifflin Country in a state 15-year-old championship game was Marshall Maidens, who scored in the sixth inning in 2018 against 21st Ward, Roxborough, in Williamsport. Mifflin County won 10-3.

In 2004, Mifflin County won a game in the 15-year-old World Series (in Longview, Wash.) against Calgary (Canada), 8-7, on a wild pitch. Bill Corbin was an assistant coach on that team. His 15-year-old team just recently won a game also on a wild pitch as it beat Broomall-Newtown, 6-5.

Josh McKay scored the wining run that day in Washington and the man Calgary was pitching to was Curtis Eversole, the lead off batter in the lineup.
