Danish’s 1-hitter lifts the Trojans

MOUNT UNION–It was a well-rounded effort as Mount Union went straight to work and took care of business defeating the Moshannon Valley Knights in five innings with a 10-0 shutout in Inter-County Conference baseball action on Tuesday.

Bryce Danish dominated throughout the evening, throwing a complete-game one-hitter in the shutout effort. The freshman shined in his varsity debut on the mound, recording four-straight 1-2-3 innings to begin the game before surrendering his lone hit on an infield single by Moshannon Valley’s Michael Kitko. After Kitko’s single, the Knights hit into a game-ending double play in the victory.

“I like the fact he’s confident when he goes out there,” Mount Union coach Tim Hicks said. “Wasn’t rattled by the moment and all we ask of our pitchers to do is to throw strikes.”

Danish struck out the side in the third inning. He finished with seven strikeouts and no walks.

“What a great game all around, great team effort, Bryce Danish first time on the mound as a freshman goes out there and he was one play away from a perfect game. Can’t ask for much better out of him,” Hicks said. “He threw strikes, kept the ball down. I thought our center fielder — again another freshman — he made great plays out there and ran a couple balls down.”

“Defensively I’m real proud with how we looked defensively,” Hicks continued. “Offensively great effort against a pitcher that threw pretty hard. We were ready to battle him and we jumped on him. I thought our guys made great swings. We got out of here in five, I can’t ask for much more.”

The Trojans got going offensively right from the get-go scoring two runs in the first inning.

Danish led off the inning with a walk. Then later on in the inning with one out and runners on the corners and Vince Lear at the plate, Lear hit a sacrifice fly out to left field for the second out which allowed Danish to score.

Catcher Braylen Knable took his turn at the plate, and singled to to left, driving in Dayvon Wilson to give Mount Union a 2-0 lead.

In the second, the Trojan bats took it to a whole new level, dropping eight runs in the frame. Mount Union went through the entire lineup during the inning.

Cameron Donaldson got the wheels in motion with a single to left field driving in Klayton Willoughby. Wilson then singled in Danish before Lear drove in Donaldson with an RBI single to right. Knable kept it going offensively with a deep shot for a two-run double that scored both Wilson and Lear.

Tyler Renninger then hit a single to left that drove in Landon Chrisemer. Willoughby then hit a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Renninger and finally Cainen Atherton drove in the final run of the inning with a single to center scoring Ian Brodbeck.

Knable led the Trojans at the plate going to 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Donaldson also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and Atherton was the third Mount Union batter to have multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

“Really we were patient,” Hicks said. “We try to teach our guys to be patient and make sure that they’re swinging at good pitches. It was a good job by all the guys that hit.”

Mount Union (4-2, 4-1) look to keep rolling on Thursday as the Trojans will host the Juniata Valley Hornets.
