Cubbison excels as Huskies top Tigers

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Mifflin County girls track and field team posted an impressive 79-71 victory over Hollidaysburg despite having just 19 athletes on Thursday afternoon at Hollidaysburg.

Kylee Cubbison had a special evening, winning the 1,600-meter run (5:47.90), the 3,200-meter run (12:08.46), the 800-meter run (2:37.36), while also contributing to the winning 4×800 relay team.

Addie Parson also came through big for the Huskies on the track, finishing second to Cubbison in the 1,600, the 3,200 and the 800, while also contributing in the 4×800.

In field events, Taylor Ciccolini led the way with a top throw in the javelin of 114 feet, 4 inches. Lily Yoder won the long jump and finished second in the triple jump.

“Overall it was just a great team effort,” Mifflin County girls coach Scott Gantz said. “Kylee Cubbison and Addie Parson each had great days along with Lily Yoder. It was just a great effort across the board with just 19 girls today.”

On the boys side, Mifflin County dropped a tough match on criteria, falling 76-75. Mifflin County had eight first place finishers, while the Golden Tigers had 10.

Brayden Harris had a great afternoon, winning the 800-meter run (2:13.14) and the mile (4:55.93).

Chris Royer won the 3,200 with a time of 10:48.94, while Reagan Ettinger had a PR in the long jump, winning with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches. Josiah Sechler cruised to a first place finish in the javelin, with a top throw of 139 feet.

“The distance kids pulled a lot of weights but we left them just a little short,” Mifflin County boys coach Scot Sechler said. “We lost on criteria with Hollidaysburg having more first-place finishes.”

Mifflin County returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to State College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.


Mifflin County 5, Chambersburg 0

LEWISTOWN – Not only did Mifflin County get its first win of the season, but it got its first sweep of the season as well, defeating Chambersburg 5-0 in a Mid-Penn Conference boys tennis match on Thursday.

All of the Huskies’ athletes won their matches in straight sets. Gavin Ream won the first singles match against Marcus Rahauser winning both sets 6-1.

The duo of Owen Shuey and Trevor Stout had back-to-back tough sets against the team of David Sandell and Ethan Brandt who represented Chambersburg. Both sets could have gone either way but Shuey and Stout gutted it out and came out victorious 6-4 in both sets.

Mifflin County (1-8) travels to Northern on Monday.

SUNBURY — Juniata defeated Shikellamy by the final of 5-0 in tennis action on Thursday.

Adam French, Emmett Hibbs and Gavin Kint all won their respective matches in straight sets. There were no doubles matches for the evening due to Shikellamy not having doubles teams so the Indians won both doubles matches via forfeit.

Mount Union 18, Williamsburg 2 (5 innings)

WILLIAMSBURG–The Mount Union bats took advantage of the Williamsburg errors leading to a 5-inning, 18-2 victory on Thursday.

The Trojans had 18 runs scored off of 11 hits. Meanwhile, Williamsburg had eight errors for the game.

Bryce Danish and Vince Lear each went 2-for-3 for the game. One of the hits for Lear was a home run.

ALTOONA — Josie Kibe led the charge for the Mifflin County offense as the Huskies defeated Altoona 13-2 in a Mid-Penn Conference softball game on Thursday.

Kibe went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Kibe was not the only one who had a multi-hit game as Alyssa Souders, Gianna Hoppel and Caitlyn Kick also recorded two or more hits.

Mifflin County travels to Bald Eagle Area today.

The game was 2-1 for most of the evening until the Trojans dropped three more runs in the fifth inning.

Alyssa Robinson went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Tigers with an RBI. Tiana Terry had a double.
