Juniata picks up key TVL victory

MILLERSBURG–The Juniata girls basketball team defeated Millersburg by a final score of 35-31 on Saturday, in Millersburg. Juniata faced a six-point defecit at the half, but its defense stepped up and held Millersburg to just 12 points in the second half.

Mackenzie Bennett exploded on offense, burying three 3-pointers and hitting six free throws to tally 15 points in the contest. Ava Shearer added nine points for Juniata.

Juniata struggled in the first quarter, scoring seven points and found themselves in an 11-7 hole. The difficulties continued into the second quarter and Juniata took faced a 19-13 score going into the half.

However, the second half of Saturday’s games was all Juniata. Bennett scored 10 of her 15 in the final two quarters and sparked Juniata’s comeback, and eventual win.

Juniata hosts East Juniata on Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Greenwood 48, East Juniata 40

MILLERSTOWN–The East Juniata Tigers held their own against the Tri-Valley league juggernaut Greenwood Wildcats, losing by a final score of 48-40, on Saturday, in Millerstown. Amara Brubaker was the lone Tiger to score in double-digits, finishing with 11 points. Leah Sankey and Alyssa Robinson tallied nine and eight points, respectively.

The Tigers trailed 23-19 in the first half in the back-and-forth battle, but Greenwood pulled away with an explosive third-quarter. Alli Crockett poured in eight, as the Wildcats took a 41-29 lead into the fourth.

East Juniata attempted a comeback, but it came up short.

The Tigers will travel to Mifflintown to take on Juniata, on Tuesday.
