Huskies topple Red Land in opener
From staff reports
LEWISBERRY — In a season unlike any other, just getting an opportunity to start playing is a win in and of itself. The Huskies girls’ basketball team made the most of the chance to begin the 2021 season on Friday night as Mifflin County started the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back in a 43-30 victory over Red Land in a Mid-Penn Keystone Division contest.
The Huskies overcame some personnel issues as multiple players are currently out with injuries or involved in contact-tracing efforts, making them unavailable to play. Having just 12 players to field a JV and varsity roster, the Huskies held a 23-10 lead at the half and matched the Patriots in the second half to pick up a wire-to-wire victory.
“We opened with a team that is rebuilding, but for us, it was a good one to get started with,” Mifflin County coach Roger Herto said. “I’m proud of how the girls played and scrapped. We were far from perfect, but we will take the win.”
Emma Weaver led the Huskies in scoring with 13 points, while Brianna Bodtorf also scored in double figures. Kate Knable had seven while Hanna Rittenhouse knocked down a pair of threes.
Herto applauded senior captain Emma Yeager for being a role model and providing a spark for the Huskies. Yeager finished with four points.
“Emma Yeager really showed some leadership as a senior captain and showed what hard work can do,” Herto said. “She did a great job of working and helping to set up her teammates.”
Mifflin County returns to action today as it hosts Palmyra in its home opener. Mifflin County’s JV game will begin at 5:30 p.m. while the varsity game tips at 7 p.m., a change instituted for this season.
“We have a much better team in Palmyra coming to our gym,” Herto said. “We’re trying to stay healthy and keep moving forward.”
