MC duo competes in separate matches

From staff reports

HOLLIDAYSBURG–Mifflin County had two golfers competing on Wednesday, with Owen Wise competing at the District 6 Class 3A Golf Championships at Scotch Valley Country Club in Hollidaysburg while Reagan Shafranich competed at the Mid-Penn Championships at Dauphin Highland in Harrisburg.

Owen Wise finished seventh overall with a score of 89, which was not good enough to advance, ending his season.

“The course was very difficult and the wind made it even tougher,” Mifflin County coach Aaron Bubb said. “It was a good showing for Owen, considering the type of weather we had today. He showed his mental toughness, and battled to get a Top 7 result. It was a great season for Owen.”

Shafranich competed at the Mid-Penn Championships with a score of 120. She now advances to the District 6 Class 3A girls championships today at Windber Country Club.

Girls Tennis

Mifflin County 3, Central Dauphin 2

LEWISTOWN–The Mifflin County girls tennis team continued an impressive string of matches on Wednesday afternoon as the Huskies topped the visiting Rams of Central Dauphin, 3-2.

Mifflin County dropped both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, but Jalynn Yoder picked up a win in No. 3 singles over Briana Trace, 6-0, 7-5, while the No. 1 doubles team of Izzy Wagner and Skye Curry picked up a tiebreaker victory, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.

The Huskies No. 2 doubles team of Aija Binder and Ella Knepp defeated Rachel Waltner and Jocelyn Sabastian in a tiebreaker as well, claiming a 6-6 (5-7), 6-6 (7-4) 10-8 victory.

Binder and Knepp were the last match to finish and had pressure on them as everyone gathered to see which team was going to win the match. The tandem powered through for the victory, pulling out the last two sets in a tiebreaker.

“Aija Binder and Ella Knepp are both sophomores who led the rally and really battled through the last two sets to pull out the tiebreaker victory,” Mifflin County coach Glenn Kyle said. “The match was super close and they were the last to finish so it all came down to them and there was some added pressure. Both of our doubles team’s played really well.”

Mifflin County has now won its last three matches and the Huskies will send a group of doubles players to Altoona for the District 6 Doubles tournament today. No. 1 doubles will consist of Olivia Kahley and Sydney Kyle, while the No. 2 doubles team of Yoder and Wagner will represent Mifflin County.
