Trojans’ strong fourth shocks Moshannon Valley

HOUTZDALE — The Mount Union football team really had to dig deep Friday night at Moshannon Valley.

The Trojans started the game missing key players, shuffling the line up and falling behind by 21 points before scoring in the first half.

The second half was a different one for the Trojans. Ethan Carbaugh had a role in three fourth-quarter touchdowns and a failed conversion try by Moshannon Valley with 11 seconds left on the clock sealed a 40-39 win for Mount Union (2-7).

“I am really proud of how the team responded and tonight they showed grit and heart in coming back the way they did for the win,” Trojans coach Rob Turner said. “This is what we have been looking for all season out of the team. We came into tonight beaten up and adjusting the line up with guys not able to play and the team stepped up and did enough to pull out the win. Moshannon Valley is a good team inside rushing. We made some adjustments and slowed them down some in the second half. The seniors on the team showed leadership with young guys on the field. Moshannon Valley is a big strong team that our speed helped us outside.”

In the first quarter the Knights put up two touchdowns that went unanswered. Joe Bacher ran the first score in from three yards out on the first drive of the game. The clock had 2:48 on when Ben Murawski run it in from the six-yard line. Dylan Honan kicked both extra points to put the Knights up 14-0.

In the second quarter the Knights moved the ball down field on an extensive drive to score with 4:41 showing.

The Trojans started the next drive and Ethan Carbaugh pounded the ball, working down field with one run of 43 yards to the 2-yard line before punching it in for the first Trojan score at 1:25. Trevor Skopic kicked the point after. The Knights were up 21-7 at intermission.

The Trojans come out in the second half and started to move the ball well against the Knights. They scored two touchdowns in the quarter and the Knights matched with a pair of scores. The Knights struck first at 10:38 on a fumbled snap on a punt with the kick failing. The Trojans then put up a score at 8:05 when Carbaugh went 36 yards for the score and Skopic kicked the point after. The Trojans covered their second onside kick of the night and turned it into a score at 5:56 when Carbaugh found Dayvon Wilson open for an eight-yard pass with Skopic adding the point after.

The Knights did not give up and at 3:10 left in the quarter Bacher busted lose for an 18-yard run and scored with the two-point conversion failing. The Knight led 33-21 at the end of the third.

The Trojans took control of the game in the fourth quarter putting up three touchdowns to take the lead and hold on. The first score came at 9:43 when Carbaugh ran it in from six yards out and Skopic added the point after. The Trojan defense held the Knights making them punt the ball away.

The Trojans moved the ball on a 38-yard run by Carbaugh to get breathing room. Carbaugh then found Wilson open again going for 47 yards in the air for the score. Skopic missed the kick after putting the Trojans on top 34-33. The Trojans again held and made the Knights turned the ball over on downs. They started the drive at the 44-yard line and on the second play Carbaugh found a crease and went 43-yards for the score. Skopic again missed the point after.

The Knights did not give up. They worked the ball to the 1-yard line and Murawski found Ethan Webb in the end zone with a 10-yard pass. They went for the win on a two-point play and the Trojans stopped Bacher at the 1-yard line to seal the win.
