Early lead by Juniata Mennonite not enough

MIFFLINTOWN — Juniata Mennonite struggled to contain Emily Garvin in its 9-3 loss to Northumberland Christian in the Allegheny Christian Athletic Association girls soccer tournament semifinal match Friday.

“I told them after the game I thought that was the best first half they’ve played all year and I’m just proud of them,” Lions coach Todd Taylor said. “They did not give up, they fought hard till the end. We had some chances but we lost to a good team today. Hats off to them but I’m proud of these girls.”

The Lions lost the previous two meetings with the Warriors during the regular season. Juniata Mennonite (12-7) will play Blair County Christian today in the third-place game at Cedar Springs Park.

Juniata Mennonite came out fiercely in the opening half as Grace Sheaffer slipped the ball by Northumberland Christian keeper Rebekah Hayner to where Annika Martin was waiting and she proceeded to blast the ball in to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.

A few minutes later, Juniata Mennonite came back for more as Peyton Burd made her way toward the net and added on to the Lions’ lead, 2-0.

The Warriors responded after that one as Emily Garvin cut the lead down to 2-1. Juniata Mennonite retaliated as Martin again stormed the net and sailed one over Hayner’s head to make it 3-1.

That’s where Northumberland Christian took over.

Garvin tacked on two more goals in the first half to not only tie the game up, but to give herself a hat trick. Emma Daku-Treas scored to give Northumberland Christian a 4-3 lead at the break.

Then it became all Northumberland Christian in the second half as Daku-Treas scored two more goals to complete her hat trick while Garvin scored three more in the final half to give herself a double hat trick.

“We had them back on their heels,” Taylor said. “We were pushing up, I think Emily Garvin and Emma Daku-Treas just took over. They’re good players, they play at an elite level and I’m proud of the girls they fought hard.”
