Barth, Orwig lead Tigers in state round

YORK — Tanner Barth and Will Orwig both shot in the 80s but East Juniata was unable to keep up with the competition in Wednesday’s PIAA Class 3A boys team golf championship played at Heritage Hills Resort.

Barth led the Tigers with an 83, 12 over par on the Par 71 course. Orwig shot an 85. Each of the two leaders carded one birdie and each hit par on eight holes. Barth had his better score on the front nine, where he was 3 over, while Orwig was fairly close on the front and back in relation to par.

Max Lauver (90) and Caleb Kirk (100) also had counting scores for East Juniata, which as a team ended the day in the sixth and final spot with a total of 358 strokes, 74 above par.

Mitchell Watts also played but his 107 was not included in team scoring. He is the only senior among them.

District 7’s Fox Chapel, led by a pair of sub-par scores, won the team title, with medalist honors going to Aidan Oehrle and Scott Bitar, who each shot 69. The winners were even as a team with a 284. Cumberland Valley was second, the best finish among eastern schools, with a 24-over 308.

Sewickley Academy won the Class 2A boys title. The girls champions were Mount St. Joseph’s (3A) and Greensburg Central Catholic (2A).
