Scholastic Sports: Mustangs defeat Braves

MIDDLEBURG–Brenna Brown scored both of the Mustangs goals in their 2-1 win over the Shikellamy Braves. Brown got the scoring started with a goal on a penalty stroke, with 13:11 remaining in the first half.

The Mustangs defense played extremely well, giving up their only goal with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. The game was tied at one unil Brown scored her second goal with 12:30 remaining in the game. Midd-West held on for the win.

In JV action, it was Shikellamy who won a defensive battle, beating Midd-West, 1-0.

Midd-West returns to action at Warrior Run on September 11.

NEW CUMBERLAND– Mifflin County finished in fifth place in their match at Riverview Golf Course. The Huskies came in with a team score of 372.

Cumberland Valley won their fifth consecutive match, with their record now at 25-0 on the season. Cumberland Valley cruised to a 31 stroke win as they finished with a team score of 316.

For the Huskies, Kolbi Knode led the way, shooting an 86, three strokes below the average in the match. Bryan and Cole Chilson shot a 92 and 93, respectively. Adam Sheetz rounded out the Huskies’ score, shooting a 101. Owen Wise shot a 94 and Brady Eversole shot a 95, but their scores didn’t count since they golfed in the sixth and seventh positions.

Mifflin County (9-19 overall, 8-17 league) will travel to Hollidaysburg for a match on September 11.

ALTOONA–The Mifflin County Huskies faced off against Altoona and lost the match, 5-0. Eve Hogan defeated Olivia Kahley, 6-0, 6-0. Isabella Frank defeated Sydney Kyle 6-3, 6-0. In the final singles match, Mya Crownover beat Jalynn Yoder, 6-4, 6-0.

The Huskies doubles fair a little better in their matches as the team of Sky Curry and Kylee Rishel lost to Sophia Caputo and Brooklyn Rupert, 7-6 (tiebreaker), 6-3. Isabell Wagner and Lily Riden also lost their match, this one by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Mifflin County will host Northern today, at home.

HARRISBURG–The Huskies traveled to Central Dauphin and lost their volleyball match, 3-0. Despite the sweep, the Huskies were able to score more points in each of the three sets. Central Dauphin won the sets, 25-4, 25-6, 25-7.

The JV team also lost to Central Dauphin, 2-0.

MIFFLINTOWN–Juniata played host to Northern Dauphin Christian School, who beat the Indians by a score of 3-1. Juniata won the first set but lose the next three and the match.

The Indians got much of their plays from their older players. Juniors Jordan and Jasmine Hockenberry combined for 33 digs, junior Kiersten Willis added 17 digs of her own, and senior Hunter Johns tallied nine kills and 10 digs.

Juniata hosts St. Joseph’s on September 11.

Boys soccer

ELIZABETHVILLE–Greenwood traveled to face off against Upper Dauphin in a match that proved to be a one-sided affair. Greenwood dominated and won 8-0.

Glenn Rice and Grant Kauffman each scored two goals, the first four goals of the game. The Wildcats offense stayed consistent as theyscored four goals in each half for the easy win.
