Mifflin County 13-year olds take on West End

MILROY — There will be no easy road for the Mifflin County Babe Ruth 13-year-olds when they open pool play in the Pennsylvania 13-year-old tournament starting on Thursday.

Mifflin County takes on West End (Williamsport) at 8 p.m. on Thursday. Then on Friday, Mifflin County plays 21st Ward from the Philadelphia area, also at 8 p.m.

It’s another Philadelphia team on Saturday night as it plays Drexel Hill at 8 p.m. Mifflin County finishes pool play on Sunday with a 5 p.m. game against Centre County (Milesburg).

Monday is an off day for Mifflin County and the final four starts on Tuesday; the state final is Wednesday.

Other teams in the tourmament are Altoona, Franklin Township (Lehighton), Scranton and Broomall-Newtown (Philadelphia area).

Mifflin Country finished third in the District 8 tournament as it beat Altoona, 15-2, and then dropped games to West End, 4-1, and Centre County, 4-2.

Mifflin County is managed by Bill Corbin, who is hoping that he gets his 700th win out of the way early in the tournament.

Corbin has an overall record of 699-330 and his All-Star mark is 88-38.

Mifflin County has a 262-58 record at the Armagh Memorial Field where it has won eight state titles at Milroy, 1983, 13-year-olds; 1987, 14-15-year-olds; 1997, 14-15-year-olds; 1999, 15-year-olds; 2004, 13-year-olds; 2005, 14-year-olds; 2007, 15-year-olds; and 2009, 15-year-olds.

In the district tournament, Mifflin County exploded for 15 runs against Altoona, but couldn’t get enough runs to win in close games against Centre County and West End.

The Centre County team was the 127th different league or region Mifflin County has played since it started in Babe Ruth in 1955.

Altoona is hosting the the Mid-Atlantic Regional and alreadyhas a spot in that tournament. If Altoona does not win the state title, then the state champion and the state runner-up will advance to regionals.
