15s rained out again; state changes

ALTOONA — For the second straight day, the Babe Ruth District 8 15-year-old tournament was rained out.

Mifflin County will take on Altoona at noon today in a winners bracket game. Both teams are1-0.

The winner will advance to the district final on Sunday.

If Mifflin County loses, it will have to play Keystone (Lock Haven) at 4 p.m. today to continue in the playoffs. Keystone is 1-1 after losing to Altoona in the first round then beating West End (Williamsport) in an elimination game.

Mifflin County needs another win after an announcement Friday from the state commissioner, Ron Zimmerman. Zimmerman declared that the field in the 15-year-old Pennsylvania tournament has been reduced from 10 to eight teams, and that one of the presumed qualifiers that will no longer advance is the third-place team from District 8.

Thus Mifflin County, which was assured of a state berth by virtue of its opening day victory over West End, will now have to finish in either first or second to continue its season. That can be accomplished by winning one game today, in either part of the bracket.

The state tournament for 15s is being held in Drexel Hill.
