LEWISTOWN –When two superior wrestling teams face off the dual meet is usually decided by who wins the toss-up matches and garners more bonus points.

In a battle of upper echelon teams in the Mid-Penn Commonwealth, Chambersburg captured two key toss-up bouts at 126 and 195 and won eight matches, scoring the bonus in six of those, to hand Mifflin County the 37-28 defeat Tuesday night. Mifflin County won six bouts with five victories earning bonus points.

“That is a very good Chambersburg team. They have a solid junior and senior group that went through the fire. They deserve a lot of credit for how they wrestled tonight,” Mifflin County coach Kirby Martin said. “It was matchups and bonus points. There’s no doubt those two things were the difference makers.”

The Huskies (9-2, 4-2) and the Trojans (12-1, 4-1) were chalk in the matches each were favored in, but it was Chambersburg who rose to the occasion in two key momentum swinging matches.

At 126, Cole Grove hit a five-point move in the first and made it stand up in a 5-1 victory over Derek Burk.

Martin, in a strategy move, bumped Jacob Krepps up to 195 to face Guy Losius. The Trojan senior put together a takedown clinic with six in a 12-6 win that put Chambersburg in front 31-16 with three matches to go.

“Burk and Krepps definitely had chances to win tonight. It just wasn’t there for them. I’m looking at this as an opportunity to grow,” Martin said. “We are green in some places and we’re young. This will test our moxie and see how we respond because we still have a lot of big matches to go.”

The Trojans clinched the dual when Wyatt Hull built up a 5-1 lead before pinning Isaac Matthews in 3:07 of their 220-pound bout.

The match started at 113 with Trojan Tyler Smith gaining a forfeit. At 120, Christian Fisher, ranked 12th in the state, made it 6-5 with a dominating 13-0 major decision over Anthony Colangelo. Fisher (18-5) had a takedown in the first, an escape, takedown and three-point nearfall in the second and a takedown with three back points in the third.

Ethan Kauffman built a 6-2 lead against Kelby Mixel before giving up a reversal and two back points late in the match forcing overtime. In sudden victory, Kauffman shot in with a deep double leg for the takedown and the 8-6 victory. The Husky junior raised his record to 14-5 on the season.

Chambersburg won the next three bouts to build up a 22-7 advantage. Kyler Everly fought hard before dropping a 4-0 decision to Spencer Runshaw, state-ranked Tate Nichter pinned Trey Shoemaker in 59 seconds at 145 and Seth Runshaw majored Anson Wagner 12-3 at 152.

At 160, third-ranked Trey Kibe (21-1) was his usual dominate self, holding a 4-1 lead before clamping Zae Kirk in 1:29. Brycen Hassinger followed with a 4-2 win over Carson Mello at 170. Hassinger (16-5), ranked 23rd in the state, continues his impressive sophomore campaign with a takedown in the first, a stall point in the second and an escape in the third for the victory over the 19-5 Mello.

“He’s confident this year and when he goes out he believes he can win. It’s fun to watch because he continues to get better. He’s a different wrestler this year,” Martin said.

Luke Nichter, state runner-up to Trent Hidlay a year ago, pinned Haydn Crum in 1:48 at 182, setting up the decisive victories by Lozius and Hull.

Blaine Davis, ranked 24th in the state, got the crowd going with a fall in 2:01 over Joey Fuller at 285. Davis (15-5) escaped and hit a lateral drop putting Fuller to his back for the fall.

“We’re glad he came out this year. He took a couple of years off. It would be scary how good he could be if he didn’t take that time off,” Martin said. “Maybe this is time for him to fall back in love with the sport and keep eating it up.”

Nic Allison ended the match on a winning note for the Huskies with a fall in 30 seconds over April Rump at 106. The Husky freshman, ranked ninth in the state, improved his record to 19-3 on the season.

“This is a chance to remind our guys we still have a lot of work to do. We had some great dual meets recently and wrestled tough, but tonight Chambersburg was better,” Martin said. “I really believe there was a maturity factor over our kids. I’m not disappointed in how we wrestled. We wrestled a very experienced and much more mature Chambersburg team.”

Chambersburg won the takedown battle 18-10. Mifflin County hosts Harrisburg on senior night Thursday at 6 p.m.

“It’s next team up and the speech will be how do we respond to adversity? How do we respond to a setback? We’ll see the character of this team after a loss like this,” Martin said.
