Six local football players set to play in Lezzer Lumber Classic

ALTOONA — Six football players from two local teams will represent the South team in the 2018 Lezzer Lumber Classic.

The game will be played Friday at Altoona’s Mansion Park with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Mifflin County has four players — Bryson Phillips, Aaron Wagner, Davis Wagner and Jacob Yoder — going to this year’s event.

Yoder was the recipient of the Alex Ufema award, recognizing the best football player at Mifflin County this past spring, acting as the anchor for the Huskies’ offensive line.

He was also named to the Mid-Penn Commonwealth All-Star team at left tackle.

Defensively, he made 40 tackles — 19 solo and 21 assisted — for the Huskies. He also had a fumble recovery.

Aaron Wagner was the runner-up for the Alex Ufema award, and was a major catalyst in the secondary. He recorded 57 tackles from his cornerback position with 39 of them being solo. He also had a tackle for loss.

Wagner was one of only four players to come up with an interception, accounting for a 1/3 of the Huskies’ total with two.

He also had an offensive reception for 12 yards this season.

His brother Davis matched him tackle-for-tackle, finishing with 57 himself with 45 of them being solo.

Davis Wagner also was key for the Huskies’ special teams, having 41 kickoffs that averaged 53.3 yards. His longest recorded kickoff was 60 yards. He had seven touchbacks and amassed 2,187 total yards on kickoffs during the campaign.

He also served as the Huskies’ punter, having gotten the ball off 41 times for a total of 1,450 yards. He averaged 35.4 yards a boot with his longest punt being 52 yards. He got seven of his punts within the opponents’ 20-yard line.

Phillips also had himself a 50-tackle season, recording 54. He had 36 of them ending as solo with one of those being a sack.

Mount Union will send two players — Daunte Martin and Levi Hockenberry — to the Lezzer Lumber game.

Martin set eight program records before his time was done with the Trojans. He rushed for 1,769 yards and 28 touchdowns his senior year — both Mount Union season records — while becoming the first player in program history to have three 1,000-yard campaigns and 4,000-plus rushing yards (4,312) in a career.

Martin also holds the record for rushing yards in a game (328), rushing touchdowns in a game (7), season (28) and career (57). He also had the record for all-purpose touchdowns with 63.

His teammate Levi Hockenberry may not be as decorated, but he was a force to reckon with defensively.

Hockenberry recorded 50 tackles — 16 of them solo — on the campaign. He also had three sacks and three fumble recoveries for the Trojans.
