MIFFLINTOWN - Nell R. VanHerwerden, 88, of the Bridges of Brookline, Mifflintown, and formerly of Thompsontown, died at 9:35 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at Brookline.
Born March 10, 1924, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, she was a daughter of the late Corneilus and Nelly (Rupke) Radder. Her first husband, George L. Day, and her second husband, Jacobus VanHerwerden, preceded her in death.
She is survived by: five children, Edward N. Day, of Franklin, W.Va., Georgean E. Leith and her companion, Rodney Aughey, of Mifflin, Sherry J. Brown, of Selma, N.C., William G. Day and his wife, Juanita, of Franklin, W.Va., and Robert J. Day, of Palmetto, Fla.; five siblings, Corneilus Radder, Elizabeth Gertesma, Mary VanDyke, Leon Radder and Addy Ellens, all of Canada; and she leaves behind five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
One son, Laurence A. Day, in 1995, and two brothers, Andrew Radder and Christian Radder, preceded her in death.
Mrs. VanHerwerden attended the Locust Run United Methodist Church, Thompsontown.
In earlier life, she was employed by several national electronics manufacturing companies as a quality control analyst.
Nell enjoyed going to the McAlisterville Senior Center, soap carving and was known for making her unique hats and matching purses.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at the Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Maureen Wagner officiating. Interment will be private.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday, at the funeral home.
