Travel online from home
AT THE LIBRARY
I’ve waited until the very last minute to write my column this week, hoping that I could share information about the Library’s reopening. Unfortunately, we have received no new word regarding our operating hours or when we may be able to be open again.
What have you been doing during this time of social distancing and staying in place? I’ve been armchair traveling.
Yesterday I went to Mount Vernon; the day before that to the National Zoo. There are some really great virtual tours that cost nothing and give such a unique perspective to museums, landmarks, and institutions. Each day we post a new place/site to visit on our Facebook/Twitter/Instagram account.
Let the library be your new travel guide for a little while.
What an opportunity we have as local, regional, and national artists live stream art lessons for children, teens, and adults. These daily classes offer a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience an artist’s talent up close and personal. Again, a list of these offerings are on our Facebook page.
Check out the authors, particularly picture book writers, who are reading their books aloud, online. Add in a few favorite celebrities reading their favorite books and have a great in-home story time experience.
For hobbyists, we’ve included online jig saw puzzles, crocheting patterns, and recipes.
And, for readers, there many, many sites with free downloadable eBooks and eaudio books to read. Maybe now is the time to get through a classic you never had time to read before, or try a new author you’ve never heard of until you are desperate for something, anything, to read.
These are certainly the most interesting of times as we awaken each morning to a new ‘normal,’ which may be different than yesterday’s normal. Hope you are safe and well. Keep reading!
