Are we on the right path in this country?

To the editor:

Reading the newspaper and watching the news makes many of us cringe. How did we get here? Perhaps we have forgotten our roots, our up bringing. Let’s take a moment and look back.

Most of us were poor but we had our family, our friends, our God and Bible. We were taught to follow the teachings of Jesus and the Ten Commandments. Mom certainly didn’t spare the rod when we needed it. Taking the Lord’s name in vain was risking a mouth wash with soap. We respected our father and mother and the decisions they made. When my brother and I stole some eggs from a neighbor’s chicken coop, Mom made us march them right back and apologize.

We loved our neighbors as ourselves and would give them the shirt off our back and they us should the need arise. There are many warnings about laziness in the Bible (Proverbs 10:4-5 Lazy hands bring poverty, but hard-working hands lead to wealth. 1 Timothy 5:8 If anyone does not take care of his own relatives, especially his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever).

I remember working from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. getting the hay in before a rainstorm. We were also expected to do chores around the house. Nothing was open on Sunday but a few gas stations. It was truly a day of rest, a day to attend church, a family day. If you wanted to go out Saturday night, you were expected to attend church on Sunday.

What happened over the last 60 years? We know what happens when nations disobey God. Will we be one of them or will we turn back to the good old days? Time is ticking!
