Anti-abortion laws are about control, not babies

To the editor:

Just recently we have had numerous states signing into law anti-abortion bills. From the draconian Georgia anti-abortion bill to the more sedate, only if Roe v. Wade gets overturned Alabama bill, they all have one thing in common, and no, it is not about saving “babies” but control of women.

Let’s look at some of the claims that the pro-life advocates make.

“It is saving a baby child.” Really? Because both medically and biologically speaking that fertilized egg goes through four stages before it can actually be called a baby or child. I mean, come on. Would you call an acorn an oak tree? The four stages are zygote, embryo, fetus — while in the womb — then comes the fourth stage called birth. It is only after birth that it becomes a separate person, until then and the umbilical cord being cut is it actually part of the woman’s body.

“It is not just their body.” This is to the male pro-lifers. If your body goes through the changes that a woman’s does when pregnant, then and only then do you have the right to say anything about abortion. Those changes include genital varicose veins, the production of hormones — human chorione gonadatropin, progesterone, oestrogen, prolactin, relaxin, oxytocin, swollen feet and ankles and bleeding gums just to name a few. So yes, it is her body.

“If you don’t want a baby then keep your legs shut.” Really? How are rape victims supposed to do that?

“The woman should make sure that she is on birth control.” Really? Why is it the woman’s responsibility to make sure that birth control is used? Surely her partner should make sure that he has some form of birth control — namely a condom — on him.

“What about the rights of the unborn being violated?” Under Roe v. Wade, the constitutionally-protected right for a woman to have an abortion came about. So to pro-gun, pro-lifers, don’t complain about your gun rights being taken away as you are taking the right for women to have an abortion away.

And, no, they are not different. They are exactly the same.
