Homemaking can be a wonderful career choice

To the editor:

Your “Careers in the Juniata Valley” supplement was so very interesting and informative. However, you omitted one common and desirable career — homemaking. Never dull or boring, homemaking involves cleaning, cooking, marketing, child care, gardening, sewing and mending, decorating, financial management, planning and scheduling, transporting, painting and repairing, correspondence, filing and record keeping, hygiene, health care, recreation, laundry, etiquette, nutrition, safety and perhaps some psychology.

If the job is done right, the pay isn’t bad. It provides housing, food, transportation, clothing, health care, insurance, retirement, vacations and recreation. It doesn’t require a degree, only common sense. It offers on-the-job training. The opportunities for developing new skills, for creative outlets and for personal growth, are infinite. It is not restricted to women. Men can be excellent homemakers and frequently are.

Case in point: George, a safari tour guide in Africa, met his bride-to-be, a physician on vacation in Africa. They returned to the States together, she returning to private practice and he to a job with the newspaper, until they had children when George became a house husband, freelance writing as a sideline. It has worked well for them.

Some find homemaking confining, but it doesn’t have to be. Volunteering is a marvelous social activity as are the YMCA programs, church and school functions, local and neighborhood activities, etc. There are more full-time homemakers in the area than you might think. It may be the largest employment industry in Mifflin County. There are also many women who would like to be homemakers exclusively, but economically they cannot. Take it from a teacher turned homemaker who is proud of this profession and can vouch for the quality of life that it offers.
