Finding ways to pass free time during shutdown is healthy for body and mind

As the coronavirus outbreak seems to disrupt our lives more and more each day, more and more folks find themselves essentially stuck at home with not much to do.

As the coronavirus outbreak seems to disrupt our lives more and more each day, more and more folks find themselves essentially stuck at home with not much to do.

And while some may take the opportunity to give their home a good, top-down spring cleaning, the truth is one can only clean so much. What else are people going to do to pass the suddenly-large supply of extra time on their hands?

We think, given how the whole point of this shutdown is to avoid being around others as much as possible, this is the perfect time to rediscover a long-lost hobby or even discover something new you never knew you enjoyed before.

It doesn’t particularly matter what it is — gardening, woodworking, exercising or anything else that can be done without the need for large groups — now is the time to do those things you “never have time for.”

Finding something constructive to do keeps people from feeling like they need to go out into public unnecessarily, thereby making the current restrictions more effective and more worth the major inconvenience they have proven to be. It can also greatly help reduce stress when people are not only worried about whether anyone they know will contract the virus, but what the potential career and financial ramifications can be.

We know it’s way easier said than done, but there really is no point in worrying about things over which you have no control. That only leads unnecessary stress and anxiety, which helps no one.

We know these are unprecendented times, which makes many people uneasy. But we urge you to find something that can — at least for a while — take your mind off the unfolding pandemic while staying away from others. It will not only be healthy for your body, but for your mind as well.
