We are sad to see ‘Back in the Day’ series come to its conclusion

We feel a little sad today as we published the final narrative in the “Back in the Day” series on the front page of our Living section (Page D1).

It’s not because of what is written or how it is presented. No, it is because they have been such a wonderful addition to the newspaper for the past six months.

Each week our staff was wowed by the compelling stories and good writing produced by Maragret Pascoe’s students at Mifflin County High School. The writers mastered the art of listening, enabling them to absorb and understand the stories told by their subjects. The students then took that information and wrote about it in a way that captured the attention of our readers. But above all, it’s obvious that each writer learned a life lesson, as well as a little cultural history, through the stories.

Throughout the series, the narrative prompted several positive comments from readers, and not one person complaining or wondering why we would put something like this in the newspaper.

We thank the students for providing such meaningful and quality content for our Living section. Reading them each and every week has been both our — and our readers’ — pleasure.
