Ferman M. Sunderland
Ferman M. Sunderland, 90, of South Market St., McVeytown, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, at his home.
Born Jan. 9, 1933, in McVeytown, he was a son of the late Oral M. and Josephine (Hart) Sunderland. His wife, Joyce A. (Stewart) Sunderland, preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 2018.
Also preceding him in death were six siblings, Charles O. Sunderland, Geraldine Kepner, Harriet Robinson, Joseph Sunderland, Ethel Moist, and an infant sister, Mary Sunderland.
Surviving are: a daughter, Cathie S. Jenkins and husband, Dr. William Jenkins, of Carlisle; a son, Peter S. Sunderland and wife, Dawn, of McVeytown; three grandchildren, Andrew G. Jenkins, Rhett W. Jenkins and wife, Katie, Pierson Sunderland and wife, Riane; five great grandchildren, Amelia Jenkins, Graham Jenkins, Miles Sunderland, Cassie Jenkins, and Felix Sunderland.
Early in life, he worked at Olmsted Air Force Base as a small engine repairman and then as a manager at Long’s Dairy and Valley Farms Dairy.
He later was employed as a grocery buyer for Reeves, Parvin & Co. (IGA) before retiring from Standard Steel.
A member of the McVeytown Presbyterian Church and its Westminster Men’s Bible Class, he also served as a church elder and trustee.
Ferm was a member of the McVeytown Lodge #376 F&AM, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon in Mifflintown, and the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona. He was also a longtime member of the Lewistown Kiwanis.
He enjoyed hunting rabbit and deer, he sorta fished, and he became an expert tent camper in Ole Bull State Park of Potter County.
An avid Penn State fan, he tailgated at Beaver Stadium for 50 years.
Ferm loved to dote on his grandchildren and great grandchildren; and he had a great appreciation for fine Scotch.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at the McVeytown Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jeffrey Fisher officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown.
A visitation will be held from noon until the time of service Tuesday at the church. Masonic services will be conducted by McVeytown Lodge #376 F&AM.
