Clarence Edward ‘Chip’ Sheriff

Clarence Edward “Chip” Sheriff, 97, formerly of Lewistown, passed away at 4:05 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 20, 2021, at Valley View Retirement Community in Belleville.

Born May 29, 1923, in West Beaver Township in Snyder County, he was the son of the late Clarence Earl and Emma (Hoffman) Sheriff. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Doris Jean Sheriff and siblings, John H. Sheriff, Ruth E. Clokey, an infant brother and nieces and nephews.

Chip is survived by his loving wife Zelepha C. (Knepp) Sheriff and son, Dr. Dennis Sheriff of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, grandson, Justin Sheriff of Memphis, TN, granddaughter, Jennifer Sheriff-Halim and husband Alex, of South Carolina great-grandson Nicholas Sheriff of Palmyra and great-granddaughter Rachel Sheriff, of Virginia Beach and a sister, Betty (Sheriff) Hoke of Colorado.

Chip was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the 148th Combat Engineers involved in the invasion of Normandy. He earned a Good Conduct Medal, a European African Eastern Service Medal with 5 bronze stars. He also received the Ruptured Duck Medal, which was an lapel button given to all honorably discharged veterans of World War II.

He was a graduate of Lewistown High School class of 1941.

He retired from The Standard Steel in 1985 as an electrician for 21 years. He also owned and operated his own dairy farm for 25 years. He was an active member of the Lewistown Alliance Church. He was also a member of Mill Run Boat Club, a charter member of Rocky Hollow Camp and Sand Springs Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and wood working.

A viewing will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2021, at The King-Barr Funeral Home LLC, 120 Logan Street, Lewistown.

A funeral service in loving memory of Chip will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, at The Lewistown Alliance Church, 50 Hudson Avenue, Lewistown PA 17044 with Pastors Neil Brenneman and John Looney to officiate.

Interment will take place in Samuels Church Cemetery.
