Velma E. Walters Kerstetter

Velma E. Walters Kerstetter, 88, of McAlisterville, passed away Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, in Fayette Township due to injuries sustained in a car accident.

Born April 14, 1931, in Liverpool, Perry County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Charlotte A. (Hoffman) Strawser.

On May 6, 1948, she was married to the late John H. Walters, with whom she was blessed to share over 27 years of marriage before his passing March 24, 1976. On Jan. 1, 1981, she was married to the late Mason M. “Dutch” Kerstetter, with whom she was blessed to share over 22 years of marriage before his passing on Sept. 22, 2003.

Surviving are: her children, Rev. Donald C. Walters and his wife, Nancy, of Thompsontown, Robert M. Walters and his wife, Donna, of McAlisterville, Richard F. Walters and his wife, Carol, of Mifflintown, and William R. Walters and his wife, Carol, of McAlisterville; one sister, Almeda Fisher, of Seven Stars; one brother, Chester Strawser, of Oriental; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and many generations of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Anna “Pat” Frymoyer; one sister, Maeeta Ferguson; and two brothers, Benjamin Strawser and Gerald Strawser.

Mrs. Kerstetter was employed as a factory worker at Elaine Hope Garment Factory in Newport and retired from the deli department at Schlegel’s Grocery in Thompsontown. She was also a member at and attended the Church of the Open Door in Evendale.

Velma enjoyed cooking, baking, reading her Bible and listening to gospel music; however, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, at the Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with Pastor Jerry Knouse and her son, the Rev. Donald C. Walters, officiating. Interment will follow at the East Salem Cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. with the family present at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019, at the funeral home.
