Gary George Mowery

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary George Mowery, 83, of Pomona Park, Fla., June 25, 2019.

Mr. Mowery was born March 16, 1936, in Burnham, to the late George and Elizabeth Mowery. He was a graduate of Burnham High School, home to his beloved “Bulldogs.” In addition, he graduated from Shippensburg – State College where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English. He continued his education attending Penn State and Bucknell universities, earning elementary/secondary principal and superintendent certificates.

Education was his passion and he spent the majority of his working years as a teacher in the Mifflin County School District. Mr. Mowery was also an administrator serving as English Dept. chairman at Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades, Media, headmaster of Carteret School For Boys Inc., Carteret, N.J., assistant principle of Lewistown Area High School, Lewistown, principal of Lewistown Middle School, chief school administrator, Somerset County AVTS, Somerset, district superintendent of Shanksville-Stonycreek School District, Shankesville, and District Superintendent of Jersey Shore School District, Jersey Shore. In 1975, he received the, “Outstanding Secondary Educators in America,” designation and was recognized in “Who’s Who in the East,” in 1981.

Mr. Mowery enjoyed the arts. He was a singer, pianist and actor. His experiences included singing in the Philadelphia Lyric Opera, in area events and directing several local church choirs. As an actor, he participated in the Stone Arch Players of Lewistown and the Williamsport Community Theater, Williamsport.

Golfing was Mr. Mowery’s favorite pastime activity. Learning the game early from his father, he passed on his skills and knowledge of the game to family members and friends. He was also the golf coach at Lewistown Area High School for several years.

Mr. Mowery is survived by: his wife, Elaine, also of Pomona Park, Fla., two sons and daughters-in-law, Shawn and Julie Mowery, of Northumberland, and Nathaniel and Claire Mowery, of Reedsville; three step daughters, Charise Mauldin, of Pomona Park, Fla., Chrysanne Dacy and Shawn Davis, both of St. Augustine, Fla., six grandchildren and 13 step grandchildren.

Family participated in a private burial ceremony at Birch Hill Cemetery, Burnham. A celebration of life is being planned for a future date.
