Civil War Round Table to host two meetings

STATE COLLEGE — The Central Pa. Civil War Round Table will host two meetings in the coming month.

On Tuesday, Sept. 30, they will meet for the annual joint meeting of the Central PA Civil War Round Table. Then on Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Penn State University George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center.

Both meetings will take place in the activities room of the South Hills School of Business and Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, State College, beginning at 7 p.m.

On Sept. 30, Ryan Quintana, will speak on “Westward How?! The Politics and Practice of Trans-Continental Travel in the Civil War Era.”

Though many know that the United States began the project of building a trans-continental railroad during the Civil War, few know about the numerous other infrastructural projects that were pursued in the years leading up to and during the War. In this talk, Dr. Quintana will explore the complicated politics of travel and transport, as politicians, migrants, and capital continually sought access to the Pacific Coast, even amidst the nation’s worst conflict.

The Central PA Civil War Round Table will meet the following Tuesday, Oct. 7. Penn State’s Lucian Holmes will speak on “Juneteenth: The Commemoration and Celebration of Emancipation and the Making of Freedom.”

Holmes is presently an assistant professor in the department of history at Penn State. He received his Ph. D from the University of Maryland. In 2020, he received a Juneteenth Scholars Program Faculty research Grant at the Virginia Tech College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

One hundred sixty years ago, events in the United States were turbulent, uncertain, nationalistic, and full of terror. All members and anyone interested in joining the Central PA Civil War Round Table are encouraged to attend.
