Juniata County maintenance schedule to resume today

MIFFLINTOWN — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Juniata County for the coming week:

Bridge maintenance and cleaning

• Route 75 (Tuscarora Valley Road) at a bridge spanning Tuscarora Creek one mile south of Waterloo in Lack Township, starting today through Friday. PennDOT will implement single-lane closures while this work is completed.

Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.

Manual patching

• Route 4002 (Licking Creek Drive) between Whisper Lane and Dorny Lane in Milford Township, starting today. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Most permanent pothole patching is completed in the spring/summer when temperatures stay consistently above freezing. If maintenance crews were not repairing potholes, the road surface would break up further and require more expensive corrective measures.

Pipe replacing and cleaning

• Route 4002 (Licking Creek Drive) approximately 350 feet west of Factory Lane in Milford Township, starting Tuesday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

• Route 4002 (Licking Creek Drive) approximately 375 feet west of West Ridge Avenue in Milford Township, starting Wednesday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

• Route 4003 (Stetler Road) half a mile north of Route 35 in Milford Township, starting Thursday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

• Route 333 a tenth of a mile east of Route 35 in Milford Township, starting Friday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.

Shoulder

Maintenance

• Route 2006 (Cedar Springs Road/Cedar Street) between Route 35 in Fermanagh Township and Route 333 in Delaware Township, starting today. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

• Route 2001 (Industrial Park Road) between Route 75 in Walker Township and Route 2006 (Cross Street) in Fermanagh Township, starting Tuesday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

• Route 2003 (Doe Run Road) between Route 3002 (Main Street) and Route 2006 (Cedar Street) in Walker Township, starting Wednesday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

• Route 2004 (Cunningham Road) between Route 2001 (Industrial Park Road) and Route 2003 (Doe Run Road) in Walker Township, starting Thursday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

• Route 2002 (Miller Hill Road) between Route 2003 (Doe Run Road) and Route 2005 (Center Road) in Walker Township, starting Friday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Shoulder cutting removes excess material and debris from unpaved shoulder areas. Shoulder grading involves the shaping and stabilizing of those same areas. Both operations improve drainage, allow water to leave the roadway, and eliminate shoulder drop-offs. These are crucial highway maintenance operations because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.

This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions.
