REEDSVILLE — East Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church will host activities highlighting the historical significance of the church during Reedsville Community Day on June 14.

The public is invited from 8 a.m. to noon to explore East Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church at 100 Walnut St. Pastor Ela J. Robertson shared that the church is an architectural gem of the area with a handcrafted wood interior and gothic arches.

This church’s massive stained glass windows underscore the importance of religion to the founding families of the community including but not limited to the Reeds, Browns, Taylors, and McNitts with the names of some of these family members memorialized in the glass.

Robertson added that some believe more than 14 angels scattered about these windows throughout the church were modeled after the children of these families.

According to Robertson, these founding families started worship in barns and homes until they built churches. The current building was built in 1892.

Reedsville Community Day participants can also enjoy music at 11 a.m. to be performed on the church’s “Carnegie” pipe organ and Steinway piano. Attendees can also explore behind the pipes of the organ where there is still evidence of billowing air powered by water.

Those attending can pick up a historical guide to the church and will receive more in depth historical discussion about the location and all it holds.

Anyone may also view the 10-foot-tall painting “Come Follow Me” of Christ walking on water painted by the late Lewistown native Mary McNitt.

Her son William McNitt will display and sell smaller inspirational and local color paintings for a donation of $20 or more. All proceeds from McNitt’s sales will go toward local missions or the “Blessing Box” on the corner of Manse.

Robertson shared that browsers, shoppers, and passersby will be offered bottled water and restroom access.

Reedsville Community Day will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with town-wide yard sales and specials at local businesses.

Starting at $2.99/week.
