Weekend of events benefits first responders
PORT ROYAL — The Supporting our Heroes organization will be hosting an inaugural “Heroes and Harmony” event on May 9 and 10 at the Port Royal Lions Club Park.
Supporting Our Heroes is a fairly new organization that started up last year to help raise money and awareness for the first responders in the community.
“We aim to help the first responders-anyone who is first in line at a crisis- in our community and their families,” said Michelle Shelley. “We help with paying water bills and getting food together to help with nourishment for on-call fire companies; we try to be pretty open to their needs.”
The first event they held was a motorcycle ride with the help of ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education), starting to help the family of Trooper Jacques Rougeau.
This year the Heroes and Harmony event was originally planned to be a food truck event with live bands; that has since expanded to a two day event with various activities for people of all ages.
Friday, May 9, will be the “bread and butter” of the weekend with food trucks opening at 5 p.m. and two bands performing at 7 and 9:30 p.m.
Saturday, May 10, starting at 10 a.m. there will be a number of activities, such as, Standing Stone petting zoo, ceramic painting, a bounce house, a rock wall, and face painting; as well as a number of food trucks and bands playing throughout the day.
“When we started dreaming up this event we started reaching out to other organizations that have always been really good to our cause,” shared Shelley. “This is such a beautiful part of living in such a small community.”
Once again, with the help of ABATE, there will be a 100 mile motorcycle ride. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and will be donation only, kickstands up at noon.
“ABATE knows what they are doing and they are great advocates, so we leave the whole ride portion up to them,” said Shelley.
The ride will start at the Port Royal Speedway and will be a 100-mile ride, planned by ABATE with scheduled restops ending at the Port Royal Lions Club Park.
According to Shelley, anyone can join the ride, even vehicles, as long as they register and follow the route.
“We are hopeful this event will continue to grow,” said Shelley. “It’s a community weekend full of people coming together to honor first responders- the people we call our heroes.”
The motorcycle ride and all of the kids activities will be by donations only, however, the food trucks will be menu pricing.
Rain or shine, people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to set up and enjoy the bands.
