Teen recognized for food pantry service

MIFFLINTOWN — A local teen was recognised for his work at the Juniata County Food Pantry during Tuesday’s Juniata County Commissioners meeting.

Brodin Oberlin was presented with the Youth Spotlight award for his dedicated work to help in the food pantry every Tuesday afternoon for the last two years.

“I will often see and hear workers at the pantry entrusting Brodin with jobs that many other kids his age would not know how to do. He does work without being told. He takes the initiative and goes the extra mile,” said Abby Krepps of the Juniata County Prevention Board.

The Youth Spotlight award is an initiative through the Juniata County Prevention Board where community members can nominate youth who are doing outstanding work in the community.

Martha Leister, of the Tri-County Drug and Alcohol was also in attendance during this meeting to speak about Alcohol Awareness Month in April. Leister shared that all of the businesses including restaurants, stores and distributors who serve alcohol in Juniata County had no violations for serving minors in 2024.

Tri-County Drug and Alcohol will present those businesses with a certificate of appreciation.

Commissioners then accepted the Project Modification Request for the Juniata County Indigent Defense Grant Subgrant Award for adjustments for year two and a new budget for year three submitted by Melissa Stewart, grants writer.

“We will be requesting an adjustment to the year two budget since space restrictions caused a delay in hiring an administrative assistant,” said Stewart.

Those adjustments include the purchase of case management software to better track cases.

“A budget for year three was just announced by Pa. Commission on Crime and Delinquency in the amount of $96,564,” Stewart added.

Commissioners approved the Juniata County Library Board of Trustees recommendation for Emily Kirk to fill Michael Hund’s expired second term on the Board until March 3, 2028.

Officials also approved the recommendation for John Stalker to fill the vacated Board position of Lindsay Hahn until August 2, 2027. Tennille Shetron will serve a second term until April 4, 2028 and Stephanie Diem will also serve a second term until June 6, 2028.
