Commissioners acknowledged 911 services

MIFFLINTOWN — Did you know that this week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week?

Public safety telecommunicators, including 911 operators and fire dispatchers, answer emergency and nonemergency calls and provide resources to assist those in need.

In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, 911 Services Director and Telecommunicator Adam Waite and Telecommunicator Nikki Pannebaker accepted a proclamation at the Juniata County Commissioners meeting for all the hard work these men and women do in Juniata County.

“I’m very thankful for the telecommunicators we have here in Juniata County. They work together for the public. Always there 24/7, 365 days a year, Christmas morning, middle of the night, always there,” said Waite.

“You seem to be doing something right, with a full staff now, which is unheard of for that department,” said Commissioner Alice Gray.

911 Services are in charge of transmitting information to other emergency personnel.

The staff communicates with police and fire departments, emergency medical services departments, as well as civilian organizations such as motorcycle couriers, taxicab providers, trucking companies, railroads, bus systems, and public utility companies. All listed services use dispatchers to relay information, direct personnel, and coordinate their operations.

The county showed their appreciation for 911 Services by presenting every employee with gifts including gift cards donated by local businesses and by the Mifflintown Mayor Roxann McGinnis.

“We’re very thankful and fortunate for the community we serve for the kind and very generous gestures,” added Waite.

During the new business portion of the Commissioners’ meeting, they approved a proposal from ECI Construction for the renovations of the Third Street Annex Building. This renovation includes office spacing to accommodate the Juniata County Probation and Parole offices.
