Winter schedule is full at Little Buffalo State Park

NEWPORT — Regardless of the groundhog seeing his shadow and what the next six weeks of winter might bring, there will be plenty of events to fill the February schedule at Little Buffalo State Park in Newport.

While the fly tying for beginners took center stage this past Saturday, avid bird watchers will be certain to flock to “Coffee with the Birds!” on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at the park.

Birders are welcome to check out the park’s bird feeders and enjoy coffee or hot chocolate with the park staff. Attendees can also make a bird seed craft to take home. The event will take place at the park office.

Monthly events at the park also include the B.A.R.K. Walk at 1 p.m. Sunday. Dog lovers can certify their furry friends as a B.A.R.K. Ranger and join a ranger or educator on a public walk or do a walk on your own.

Learn the rules and regulations regarding pets and service animals in state parks and forests. Meet at the main boat launch on Boat Launch Road. No registration needed.

Can’t make it in February, the program returns on March 22, April 5 and April 13.

Also on Sunday, starting at 10 a.m., the park will provide a crash course on how to make maple syrup at home. The session covers tapping the tree, getting equipment and processing methods.

The program will also be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 15 — when an open house will be held, along with operating their evaporator and weather and sap flow permitting — and at 1 p.m. Feb. 22.
