MCHS to host event, FAFSA completion night

LEWISTOWN — Gearing up for college can be stressful for both parents and students going off to further their education, but there is help available.

Thanks to the staff, the Mifflin County High School will hold a FAFSA completion night at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

It is a government form that students can use to determine if they’re eligible for financial aid from the federal government.

If students qualify, they will receive further information regarding what to do next.

This event begins in the cafeteria of the Mifflin County High School and moves to the library and conjoining computer lab.

Some of the applications found online cost money and there is no guarantee they are hosted by a legitimate website.

However, FAFSA is a free application, and event attendees will receive guided help from Penn State’s Former Student Aid Coordinator Jamie Kosh.

“He is incredibly knowledgeable and has been a great resource for us,” said Bridgett Kennington, MCHS guidance counselor.

MCHS has had guest speakers in the past like LeRoy Spicer and Darla Gosa from South Hills,

Craig Dietrich of Penn State as well as Heather Haines from The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology.

“We noticed a lot of students were first-time college goers, and their parents never went through this process themselves. It can be overwhelming,” added Kennington.

In the fall, MCHS also holds a financial aid night where the school staff shares some general information with students, including examples of some of the documents they will see and how to fill them out properly.

Starting at $2.99/week.
