BEAVERTOWN — She isn’t a Beavertown native, but Karen Burns is the utmost expert on all things Beavertown.
The longtime president of the Beavertown Historical Society was actually raised in New Columbia, Union County. She and her husband, Thomas, moved to the area in 1973 when he became the band director at West Snyder High School.
Burns is still learning about the place her family has called home for more than half a century. She has also just released a book, “Beavertown’s Snapshots in Time: A Rich History,” which chronicles the borough’s past with about 1,000 historical photos and detailed accounts.
“This is the only book I have written, and it took me five years to complete due to the extensive research and the large number of pictures involved,” Burns explained.
“I included nearly 1,000 images because I believe that a picture offers a unique glimpse into the past that words alone can’t convey,” she added.

The inspiration for the 348-page “Beavertown’s Snapshots in Time” book came from a three-ring binder containing information on 150 businesses that had operated in Beavertown over the years.
The history society received the binder from Beavertown native Carole (Ritter) Jones, who is also listed as the co-author of the book.
While Jones wasn’t interested in expanding on the material in her binder, she was willing to help with the research. Burns was determined to take the binder full of information one step further.
“I decided to build on her foundation, expanding the list of businesses to include every business I could find from both the past and present,” explained Burns, who ended up showcasing 850 businesses in the hardbound book.
“I also aimed to include as much information as possible about our town and its people,” Burns added. “My hope is that this book will not only bring back fond memories for those who read it, but also preserve the rich and remarkable history of Beavertown for generations to come.”

Covering a wide range of topics, the book highlights Beavertown’s War Memorial, borough council, local businesses, community celebrations, organizations, musical groups, sports, car racing, schools, churches, U.S. Post Office, mayors, notable residents, police, doctors, streets and the railroad.
Orders have been fast and furious for copies, which are fresh off the press.
“We initially ordered 450 copies, and they sold out in just over two weeks,” Burns said proudly. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many people sharing their appreciation for the book:
‘Whoever worked on this book outdid themselves. It is a wonderful historical book where old meets new. Thank you for putting this together.'”
Those were just a few of the accolades from readers and natives.

There were more, each full of pride and praise: “This book is a real treasure. A lot of time and effort is put into this. A huge ‘thank you’ to all involved in the preparation and distribution.”
There were certainly others: “I got the WOW book today!!!!! Fabulous job. I just scanned it, but it looks great! Thank you! This book is a must-see gem of memories for all, near and far. Wonderful job!”
And still others: “I really enjoyed the book. I was not aware of all the businesses and innovative residents Beavertown has/had! Picked mine up this afternoon … love it! Great job to those that worked on this project…definitely worth the wait!”
While the initial first printing has sold out, there is still significant interest in the book. The historical society would like to place a second order but needs a minimum of 100 pre-orders to do so.
The cost of the book is $45, with proceeds benefiting the Beavertown Historical Society.
