Five throwbacks for fall
The time when Halloween festivities are gearing down and Christmas fans are pushing the holiday music but what about that time in between?
When the air finally gets cold and all you want to do is curl up with a good movie or show, maybe your favorite snack and something warm to drink.
I don’t like to dive into the Christmas movies and have them all watched before December even begins so starting off slow with an end of Summer favorite this 1995 classic is mixed with a little bit of spooky adventures making it the perfect movie to watch in November.
“Now and Then” available on Amazon Prime is the story of four childhood friends who come together to celebrate the birth of one of them having a daughter of her own where they relive their fondness and not so great memories, wondering how the 12 year olds they were then could be the women they are now.
Starring Rosie O’donnell, Melanie Griffith, Demi Moore, and Rita Wilson as the adult versions and Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffmann and Ashlegh Aston Moore as the preteen versions of themselves.
A not-so-family friendly throwback giving you all of the Thanksgiving Day vibes, “Son In Law” is one of those movies I could watch on repeat.
Available on Hulu this 1993 throwback is about a small town farm girl played by Carla Gugino who travels to the big city to live out her college dreams when she unexpectedly befriends a young man played by Pauly Shore.
The polar opposite of her, this flamboyant party animal takes her under his wing and guides her as she figures out the lay of the land.
After having a taste of college life she returns home for thanksgiving break with her new friend who is now a fish out of water himself as he is thrown into the hustle and bustle of farm life.
Up next a 1998 tear jerker and in my opinion one of the best mother and son/daughter moments in cinematic history.
Labeled as a comedy drama on IMDB, “Stepmom” is about a younger women named Kelly, played by Julia Roberts who marries a newly divorced Luke, played by Ed Harris just three years after getting his divorce and try as she might she can’t seem to win his children or his ex Jackie played by Susan Sarandon over.
That is until Jackie falls ill with cancer deciding she must draw the white flag and get along with Kelly so her children will grow to love and trust her. So she has someone she can trust to carry out the motherly duties after she’s gone.
Another tear jerker, a 1995 family fantasy movie titled “Fluke” on Pluto, stars Matthew Modine as a self-centered businessman who spends more time working then with his family but an accident occurs leaving him dead he is reincarnated as a dog and attempts to reconnect with his family.
Of course it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving vibes without a classic like “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
A 1987 comedy adventure movie about two unlikely fellas who both face an issue of getting home for the holidays when their flight is diverted leaving them with a three day trek back to chicago to make it home for thanksgiving.
Neal, played by Steve Martin, is an uptight marketing executive while Del, played by John Candy who is annoying in a mean- sort of way.
