Commissioners approve $44M draft budget

LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County officials are not anticipating a tax increase for property owners in 2025.

On Thursday, Commissioners approved the county budget for public display. It will be adopted during the board’s meeting on Dec. 19.

The $44.5 million budget includes $18.9 million going toward human services, $9 million going toward general government services, $5.3 million going toward judicial, $8.5 million going toward public safety and $1 million going toward debt services.

The budget also projects $478,300 going toward public works, $438,798 to community and economic development, $249,650 to culture and recreation and $423,035 to miscellaneous.

The amount of the total budget was up from last year’s $37.74 million.

Mifflin County revenues for 2025 include $14.6 million from taxes, $25.2 million from state and federal funds, $188,120 from fines, $2.99 million from charges for services.

Revenues also include $477,500 in interest, $685,479 from other sources and $419,723 from the county’s fund balance.

“In 2018, the county reduced its millage rate to 15.77 mills, and that rate has continued for eight consecutive years,” Commissioner Kevin Kodish said. “The county has been able to maintain this level by working to secure grant funding for projects and costs, implementing cost-cutting measures, and benefitting from some pockets of development and growth throughout the county.”

The full budget document is available for public inspection at the Commissioners’ Office on the second floor of the Mifflin County Courthouse. Citizens may also view a budget summary on the county website at www.mifflincountypa.gov.
