MCSD receives $3M grant

Funds to go toward athletic facilities

LEWISTOWN –Mifflin County School District is to receive a $3 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department for Community and Economic Development that will be used toward its proposed athletic facilities upgrade, Superintendent Vance Varner asnnounced.

Funds from the DCED Grant will be used to build multi-purpose athletic fields that will accommodate more than 1,500 students participating in field hockey, football, band, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, and track and field. Youth programs, including recreational league football, cheer, field hockey, baseball, softball, soccer, track and field, and Special Olympics also would have access to these facilities.

Community members at large would also have access to walking and outdoor exercise at the facilities.

The project is a joint effort between the Mifflin County School District and a local group committed to raising the necessary funds to help make the much-needed athletic upgrades a reality. Local businessmen Joel Diamond, John Pannizzo and the late Don Chapman III have been at the forefront of the group that proposed the new stadium project to the Mifflin County School Board.

State Sen. Jake Corman is serving as honorary chairman for the group.

“This grant is a big step in the process which in the end will greatly benefit our student-athletes and the community at large,” Pannizzo said.

The public is invited to a press conference regarding the announcement at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mifflin County High School. Corman, Varner, Pannizzo and Athletic Director Tish Maclay will announce more updates on the project and details on the grant.
