Police: DUI suspected in crash early Tuesday

Report: No one in car was wearing seat belt

LEWISTOWN — Two people were seriously injured early Tuesday morning in a crash on Back Maitland Road in Derry Township in which police suspect alcohol played a role.

Mifflin County Regional Police Department said 26-year-old Mark A. Hockenberry Jr., of McClure, was driving east on Back Maitland Road at approximately 1:39 a.m. Tuesday when he lost control of his vehicle near the intersection with Crossover Road.

According to police, Hockenberry’s vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, struck a tree head on and Hockenberry sustained injuries to his face and head from impacting the windshield. He was transported to Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital by Fame EMS and police said Hockenberry was processed for suspected driving under the influence while at the hospital.

“Alcohol most definitely played a role in the crash,” MCRPD Chief Andre French told The Sentinel.

A 22-year-old female passenger in the back seat had to be extricated from the vehicle and was flown to Penn State’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey where she was listed in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday, police said.

Police said a 24-year-old male passenger in the front seat was not injured and that none of the three occupants of the vehicle were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Police also reported finding illegal narcotics and paraphernalia inside the vehicle and noted the incident remains under investigation at this time, including by a Pennsylvania State Police accident reconstruction specialist who was called to the scene.

French also said he wished to thank the Chief Logan and City Hook and Ladder fire companies for their assistance in the extreme cold temperatures.
