Coroner reports 26 COVID deaths following Sept. 1

23 of deceased not vaccinated

LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County Coroner Daniel P. Lynch says that 26 deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported to his office since Sept. 1.

Of those, 23 of the decedents were not vaccinated.

The three vaccinated decedents had a history of auto-immune disease, his report states.

According to Geisinger, nearly 90% of those hospitalized for COVID-19 are not vaccinated.

State Department of Health figures show that only slightly more than half of Mifflin County residents are vaccinated, as are 45% of Juniata County residents. The statewide vaccination rate is 70.8% as of Wednesday.

COVID vaccines have been available since Dec. 11, 2020, initially under an Emergency Use Authorization for those 16 and older. On May 10, use was approved for ages 12 to 15. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine received full approval in the United States in August.
