Local counties see slight drop in new case rate

Transmission level remains substantial over past week

The number of new cases of COVID-19 in the five-county region dropped slightly over the past week compared to the week prior but the transmission levels remain substantial, according to data released Monday by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

In Mifflin County, there were 420 new cases of COVID-19 reported over the past week for a new total of 1,781 cases since the pandemic began in March. A total of 463 new cases had been reported the week prior. Officially, there were 11 new deaths in Mifflin County this past week, which is slightly down from 15 the week before. There have been a total of 33 COVID deaths among county residents, according to the health department.

In Juniata County, there were 121 new cases reported for a total of 742. That’s down from 208 new cases the week prior. Two more deaths were also reported, raising that total to 14.

Snyder County added 145 new cases, making its total 1,016. The week before, there were 169 new cases reported. Snyder County did not report any additional COVID deaths in the past seven days, leaving that total at 20.

In Huntingdon County, 168 new cases were reported for a new total of 1,743. The week prior, 203 new cases had been reported. There were seven additional deaths attributed to COVID-19, bringing Huntingdon County’s total to 54.

In Perry County, an additional 88 new cases were reported, bringing the total to 679. Perry County remains at nine total COVID deaths after not reporting any new deaths over the past week.

The health department reports 45 people are currently hospitalized in Mifflin County due to COVID-19, seven of which are in the intensive care unit. No patients are reported as currently using a ventilator to assist breathing.

In Huntingdon County, nine patients are hospitalized due to COVID, with two in the ICU. There are no patients on ventilators in Huntingdon County, according to the health department.

Officials have warned that numbers could be skewed over the next several weeks due to reporting inconsistencies over the Thanksgiving holiday, which was this past Thursday.
