Juniata Co. to receive CARES Act funding

Commissioners yet to decide how to distribute money

MIFFLINTOWN — As the effects of COVID-19 continue to impact small businesses, Commissioner Alice Gray had hopeful news to share during Tuesday’s Juniata County Commissioners meeting.

“The county will be receiving some of the CARES dollars. We will be doing some outreach to certain entities to determine how we are going to spend those CARES dollars. We have not finalized that. We do know there is a very quick turnaround.

“One of the places we have in consideration is small business grants. There was an announcement made yesterday by Gov. (Tom) Wolf that there is another whole grant process for small businesses. So our Chamber of Commerce and hopefully our Juniata Business and Industry is going to handle that grant process for us.”

For more information call the Chamber of Commerce at (717) 248-6713.

Juniata Business and Industry asked that if a business received a survey from them through doodle poll to please respond. It is in regard to how the situation over the last few months has affected local business owners. For those who did not receive it, contact Dane Walters by email at dane7781@aol.com.

Director of Human Services Allison Fisher said, “The county has received dollars to assist those who have had a reduction of more than 30% of their income and are behind on their rent.”

The Rent Relief program applications are available on the county website. Applications will be accepted starting July 6.

Commissioners congratulated Paige Smith of East Juniata High School and Garrett Baublitz of Juniata High School on receiving the 2020 Nester College Scholarship award.

Other matters of business included the approval and ratification of the following:

¯ Initial project selections for the Juniata County Community Development Block Grant COVID (CDBG-CV) application.

¯ Ratified Home Housing Rehab Project checks submitted by Juniata County Planning and Community Development Department for $16,720 and $22,800.

¯ Approved “Space Available Agreement” between Juniata County and Central Counties Youth Center as submitted by the Children and Youth Services Fiscal Department.

¯ Approved payment of checks in the amount of $75,848.40.
