Railroad Club prepares for Ice Fest
Festival of Ice will boast club’s models this Dec.
LEWISTOWN–The Festival of Ice is approaching, and downtown Lewistown will soon be crowded with attendees. In light of this, the Mifflin County Railroad Club will have their open house during the festival. Over 2,000 people come through the open house each festival, and the club thinks this year will be no exception.
The railroad club started out as a bunch of friends going from house to house helping each other work on the track layouts they had at home.
The club started in the early ’70s at its first home on Valley Street. This was short-lived due to an arson fire destroying the building the club was in. Following the fire, the club relocated to a different building before eventually ending up at its current location in Monument Square.
The club has put on an open house for the Festival of Ice since it started. The club curretly runs two seperate train layouts. The trains themselves come from a variety of places. Most are personal and owned by members of the club. Others have been donated by the community so they can watch them run. Some of the trains belonged to previous members of the club. They run these to keep alive the memory of the those who are no longer able to take part in the festivities.
Raffle tickets can be purchased at the open house, the hobby store in Lewistown or by calling Forest Zeiders at (717) 994-0130. The prizes are a custom built N-scale layout, a 1952 Lionel train set, an H-O scale train set and three train cars. Club member Jeff Jacobs said, “Community is what keeps us alive.” The displays will be available to view on the following dates:
