How to get ready for Goose Day

Goose Day isn’t until Sept. 29, but there are plenty of things you can do now to celebrate in style, and maybe getting an extra boost of that good fortune promised to those who eat the lucky fowl on that day.

Take some time right now to mark your calendars, plot your approach in your planners and gather together your teammates to take part in a wide variety of fun events.

Here are just some ways you can get ready:

¯ Consult The List at www.JuniataRiverValley.org, compiled by the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau to plan which things you want to do. You’ll find all of the details about all of the activities, events and special promotions there.

¯ Watch for updates on Facebook by liking the “Goose Day in the Juniata River Valley” page.

¯ Add “The Goose Day Shuffle” and “Celebrate Goose Day” to your playlist. Find them on YouTube.com. The tunes were written and recorded at West Market Studio in Lewistown.

¯ Preorder homemade apple dumplings at Ohesson Manor Nursing Home (by Sept. 20). Orders must be prepaid and picked up by Sept. 27. Call (717) 242-5710.

¯ Hurry! You have until tomorrow to order your goose meat from Wilson’s Meat and Groceries at 4. S. Delaware Ave., Lewistown, to have it in time for Goose Day.

¯ Take your picture (bring your own camera) with Mrs. Goose during regular business hours at Snowflake’s on the Square in Lewistown, or from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Mifflintown Farmer’s Market.

¯ Enter a contest –the One Stop Communications quiz; Goose Day Coloring Contest sponsored by Snowflake’s on the Square and In Home Services of Central PA; The Sentinel’s Goose Day Selfie Sweepstakes. Consult The List for details.

¯ Hurry! Entries in The Great Goose Photo Contest are due on Friday, with voting from Sept. 14 to 20. Get the details on the contest Facebook page.

¯ Pick some teammates and make your reservations to enter Team Trivia on Sept. 22, hosted by the Mifflin County Historical Society. The trivia contest begins at 2 p.m. Entry forms are available at the Historic Courthouse and via the Mifflin County Historical Society Facebook page. Or call (717) 242-1022.

¯ Do a good deed by donating a grocery bag of canned soup for the Backyard Club. Take it to Yoder’s Tees and More in Belleville and you’ll get a free Goose Day T-shirt.

¯ Check out the Wild Geese invading the area in the form of five-foot-high fiberglass geese “dressed” for the occasion by local artists. Unveilings will be held at: noon, Sept. 24 in front of JP’s Restaurant, Mifflintown; 12:15 p.m., Sept. 26 at the Mifflin County Courthouse, followed by another on Monument Square; at the Mifflin County High School homecoming football game on Sept. 27. The project is sponsored by Community Partnership RC&D.

¯ Make your own goose magnet/ornament for $5 at Hometown Potter’s Studio in Lewistown on Sept. 25 and 27.

¯ Train for the 42nd Annual Goose Day 5K Run, starting and ending at Monument Square in Lewistown on Sept. 28. Visit www.jvstriders.com.

¯ Find a fest to attend –The Goose Day Pumpkin Festival, Sept. 27-28 at the Youth Park in Reedsville; or The Goose Day Fun Fest, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 28 at Rec Park in Lewistown; the Thompsontown Fall Fest, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 28; or the Fall Family Fun Festival, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept. 28 at Valley Vew Retirement Community in Belleville.

¯ Get a gaggle together to enter the 42nd annual Goose Day Road Rally on Sept. 29. Registration is 8-9 a.m. in the parking lot of Londonderry Restaurant in Reedsville. Questions? Call (717) 250-3670.

¯ Show up for the ultimate Goose Day group shot before or after your Goose Day meal on Sept. 29. The visitors bureau is asking the community to show its Goose Day pride by participating in the event at 1 p.m. on Monument Square in Lewistown, and at 3 p.m. on the lawn of the Juniata County Courthouse.

¯ Plan where you will eat your Goose Day dinner to guarantee good fortune for the coming year — there’s a list of local restaurants serving the lucky meal or related goodies at www.juniatarivervalley.org.
