Bridge work starts soon in Juniata County

MIFFLINTOWN — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Friday that work to repair a bridge along Pumping Station Road in Juniata County is scheduled to start Monday, May 20. The bridge spans Lick Run, two miles north of the village of Perulack in Lack Township. The repairs will improve the status of the bridge from “poor” to “good”.

As work begins on May 20, the bridge will be closed, and a detour will be in place. The detour will use Pumping Station Road, Berry Ridge Road, Campbell Hollow Road and Route 75.

Built in 1938, the bridge is 35 feet long, and carries an average of almost 200 vehicles each day. PennDOT expects the bridge to re-open to traffic in late August.

Overall work on the Pumping Station Road bridge will include removal of the open steel grid deck and steel beams, replacement of the abutment tops and wings, placement of a light-weight concrete deck, paving, guide rail updates and pavement markings.

This is the first of three bridges to be repaired under one contract. The other bridges are located on state Route 3002 (William Penn Highway), and state Route 35 (South Main Street) in Mifflintown. The state Route 3002 bridge is scheduled for repair this year. The Mifflintown bridge will be repaired in 2020.
