Property Tax/Rent Rebate appointments start April 23

LEWISTOWN — As the AARP Tax Program winds down in April, Mifflin-Juniata Regional Services will once again offer appointments for those who need assistance with property tax/rent rebate applications.

The Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is for older adults and residents with disabilities. The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 and older, widows and widowers who are 50 and older and people with disabilities who are 18 and older. The income eligibility level is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters. Half of Social Security income is excluded, and the maximum rebate for both owners and renters is $650.

Customers must bring proof of all 2018 income received such as 1099 Social Security forms, interest and dividend forms, pension and retirement statements, W-2 forms and any other income received in 2018. Applications also require 2018 property tax bills stamped by the tax collector and/or a rental certificate affidavit filled out by their landlord, and a completed federal or Pennsylvania income tax return if one was filed in 2018. First time filers must also bring proof of one of the following program qualifications: age, disability or widow/widower status.

The organization will begin taking calls for property tax and rent rebates on April 1, and the first appointment slots are slated for April 23. Call the office at (717) 242-0315 ext. 112 or at (800) 348-2277. The deadline to apply for the program is June 30. Rebates will be distributed beginning July 1, as specified by law. Applications are also available for pickup at the Mifflin-Juniata Regional Services office on 249 W. Third St., Lewistown, or online at www.revenue.pa.gov/FormsandPublications.
