Stringer waives arraignment

Beavertown man charged with strangulation

MIDDLEBURG — John R. Stringer, 53, of Beavertown, waived his formal arraignment Friday. Stringer is charged with 10 criminal counts including strangulation and insurance fraud.

According to court documents, Pennsylvania State Police-Selinsgrove responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in June. During the reported event, the accuser told police about two incidents in May when Stringer became enraged; during the first, Stringer reportedly physically assaulted the accuser. In the second, Stringer allegedly attempted to strangle the accuser while he uttered verbal threats and derogatory remarks. The accuser reported being unable to breath through the nose or mouth during the strangulation incident.

The accuser reported a third incident, on June 16, during which Stringer had been consuming alcohol since the morning on the way to Raystown Lake. Stringer reportedly drove 100 m.p.h. after the accuser called family to borrow a car. Later, after being asked to leave due to having a dog, which was not allowed, Stringer became enraged, after which he allegedly started drinking alcoholic beverages in rapid succession, court documents state.

Documents state that the accuser and Stringer went to Poe Valley State Park to go tubing. When a park officer ordered them out of the water because tubing was not allowed, Stringer demanded they leave and began driving at a high rate of speed. When the accuser reportedly asked Stringer to slow down, Stringer hit the accelerator and drove faster, causing the vehicle to fishtale. The vehicle spun, went down an embankment and struck a tree, causing damage to the rear of the vehicle. Stringer reportedly called a friend to tow the vehicle to an address in McClure, and did not report the accident to police. When Stringer and the accuser returned home, he forced the accuser to call the insurance provider and tell the company that Stringer was not driving and that the accuser swerved to avoid hitting a deer.
