Garbage truck damaged in fire

No injuries reported in vehicle blaze

LEWISTOWN — A garbage truck went up in flames around 2:49 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Mifflin County Communications dispatched multiple pieces of fire equipment to the Mifflin County Landfill at 87 Landfill Road, Derry Township. The communications center advised arriving apparatus that it was on the scale and endangering structures at the landfill. At the end though, only one garbage truck was damaged after the cab caught fire Thursday afternoon.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the cab of the truck to be engulfed in flames and off the scale. Employees of the landfill had used a forklift to push the truck off the scale and away from the buildings.

Crews were able to quickly put the fire out. No damage was done to the scale or buildings.

Mifflin County Regional Police Patrolman John Miles and East Derry Fire Chief Ed Mann looked over the truck to try and find a cause. Both said that with the extent of the damage, and where the fire was, finding an exact cause will be difficult.

Fire companies on the scene included East Derry, Highland Park, Burnham, Junction, Brooklyn, City Hook and Ladder and United Fire and Rescue. Fame EMS and Derry Fire Police were also on scene.
