Palliative care physician joins Geisinger-Lewistown

LEWISTOWN — Nicki Vithalani, M.D., a board-certified palliative care physician has joined the staff of Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital.

Palliative care is an extra layer of support for patients with serious, life-altering illnesses. Palliative care works with primary care and specialist teams to coordinate medical care centered on a patient’s goals and values and helps them maintain control by ensuring their quality of life is at the core of all treatment decisions.

Vithalani completed medical school at King’s College in London, United Kingdom.

She completed her family medicine residency at the Penn State Health Family Medicine Residency Program at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College where she served as chief resident. She was honored with the American Academy of Family Physicians Leadership in Graduate Medical Education award and is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Prior to joining Geisinger, Vithalani worked for the National Health Service at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, United Kingdom. She returned to America and pursued fellowship training in one of the country’s leading palliative care programs at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center in California.

She is a professional member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Palliative care can be provided alongside treatments with curative intentions, as well as focus on symptoms that may occur as part of these illnesses or treatments. Vithalani will be available for inpatient consultations at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital, as well as outpatient clinic at in the Community Cancer Treatment Center at 211 3rd St.
