Cincinnati, Boston destinations for historical society trips

LEWISTOWN –Destination History has announced two Mifflin County Historical Society trips for 2018 — a four day trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, in June, and a four-day trip to Boston in July.

Cincinnati

The trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, The Queen City, will take place June 7 to 10.

Highlights include:

¯ Byesville Stationary Train Experience, a tour and lunch that includes presentations by coal miners about the lives of the miners who worked underground in the Marietta Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad;

¯ Guided tour of the American Steam Locomotive Museum and Cambridge Wooden Toy Company;

¯ Manager Reception at the Holiday Inn Covington with drinks and hot and cold appetizers;

¯ Guided tour of Rookwood Pottery;

¯ Tour of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption featuring 82 stained glass windows including the Rose window, the largest stained glass window in the world;

¯ Findlay Market, Ohio’s oldest continuous operated public market and grab bag tour of market;

¯ Guided tour of Beau Verre Studios, the oldest documented continuously operating stained glass studio in the United States;

¯ Tour of Lebanon, Ohio, an historic town used in the filming of many movies including Harper Valley PTA and the recent Hallmark Christmas Movie, “The Christmas Spirit;”

¯ Dinner at Historic Golden Lamb Inn, Ohio’s oldest inn;

¯ Tour of Cincinnati with stops along the way to view the World Peace Bell, William Howard Taft home:

¯ Private luncheon riverboat cruise along the Ohio River with music and commentary;

¯Progressive dinner tour of two historic mansions – Hillforest Victorian House Museum and Veraestau Historic House;

¯ Living History tour of Roscoe Village on the Ohio and Erie Canal.

The price includes transportation and baggage handling (one bag per person), three nights accommodations, three breakfasts, two lunches, three dinners, all admissions and entrance fees to attractions, tour guides and bus driver gratuities. The cost for members is $720 for double, $895 for single; non-members, $740 for double, $915 for single. Make reservations quickly as these trips have been filling up fast. A $100 deposit is required at the time reservations are made. Final payment is due April 1, 2018.

Boston-Salem

The Boston Pops 4th of July and Salem trip will take place July 2 to 5.

Highlights include:

¯ Quincy Market;

¯ Tour of Salem and House of the Seven Gables;

¯ Boston Pops 4th of July Rehearsal Concert on July 3 at the Hatch Shell Stage ;

¯ Tour of Cambridge and Harvard Yard;

¯ Spirit of Boston Harbor Cruise;

¯ Tour of historic Boston that includes Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Boston Common, Old Statehouse;

¯ Charlestown Navy Yard and USS Constitution Museum;

¯ Fireworks Spectacular on July 4th on the Charles River viewed from the front of our hotel. The grand finale is the 1812 Overture with the fireworks exploding in time to the music.

The price includes transportation and baggage handling (one bag per person), three nights lodging, three breakfasts, one lobster luncheon cruise, two dinners; chair rental for the Boston Pops rehearsal and fireworks; all admissions and entrance fees to attractions, tour guides and bus driver gratuities.

The cost for members is $935 for double, $1,215 for single; non-members, $955 for double, $1,235 for single. Make reservations quickly as these trips have been filling up fast. Half payment is required at the time of reservation. Final payment is due May 15, 2018.

Full refund up to 30 days prior to the trip will be made, unless there are unrecoverable deposits/expenses by terms and conditions of the tour vendors. If the cancellation is made within 30 days prior to departure, the cancellation fee is $10 per person, per travel day, plus any fees that cannot be recovered. Anyone who is not present on the day of the tour departure will not receive any refund. Information is available for anyone interested in purchasing trip cancellation insurance. The insurance covers medical issues only.
