Philly area teacher suspended for election remarks

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A suburban Philadelphia public school teacher has been suspended after the district says she made “racially insensitive and discriminatory remarks” following this year’s presidential election.

The district school board announced the suspension of the unidentified Cheltenham High School math teacher on Wednesday.

Officials say the teacher was discussing the impact of Donald Trump’s election on the Black Lives Matter movement when she allegedly told students to stop complaining about being black.

One student reportedly left the classroom in tears.

Others sought out school administrators to complain about the teacher’s remarks.

A letter sent to parents said the district “will not tolerate acts of discrimination and intimidation of our students and staff.”

Calls to the Cheltenham Educators’ Association weren’t immediately returned.
